Testament

6.18.19

Verse

For forty days, and for forty nights

I did what I could to keep you by my side

But the offering was lacking, according to you

I never meant to start a way

My words fall flat, then they hit the floor

And now I’m left to tear down your golden idol

I missed the target, I know it’s true

Bleeding out to try and appease you

My trigger finger wavered, but I didn’t

I can confess: I fell apart

My tears could not move your pharaoh’s heart

Petrified just for some twisted pleasure

Chorus

My birthright is gone, you stole it away

Prayed that it would mend you, forgive and replace

The burning bush spoke, but you’ve still been unkind

There is a balance, and vengeance is mine

Verse

Curse the red sea, ignore the plagues

Guess we’re not all destined to be saved

Even the serpent said you shouldn’t trust him

Cross my fingers and hope to live

There is nothing else that I can give

I’m praying there’s a ram meant for that altar

My dear Cain, what have you done?

Oh the earth cries out for this blood

The life you took was not yours for the taking

Angels wrestle and slingshots fly

Some kings fall on their own swords and die

I know I’m not too holy but I’m trying

Chorus

My birthright is gone, you stole it away

Prayed that it would mend you, forgive and replace

The burning bush spoke, but you’ve still been unkind

There is a balance, and vengeance is mine

David did lust, Joseph, he dreamed

Moses was a killer, and Rahab deceived

Shadrach and Meschach and Abednego

They weathered the fire, survived the inferno

Yael did behead, Delilah betray

Jonah flee Nineveh, and Abram obeyed

Elijah was raptured, and Sarah she lied

Job was made low, and Micah, he prophesied

Jacob might have offered, but Esau chose to take

God promised to Noah, He would never forsake

Eve may have craved, but it was man who did eat

I’m not my first pick, but I’m in good company
